With an aging parent, the worries never seem to stop. You worry about your mom’s driving skills. Can she turn her head far enough to properly check her blind spots? Your dad’s mobility has changed greatly since he broke his leg. He struggles to walk up the stairs and often seems unable to balance for long.
When this happens, you have to take on the role of a parent. You become responsible for keeping your parent safe and making sure they have rides to the doctor and stores. Parenting your parents is hard.
Here are tips on making sure you get things done, even when it seems impossible.
-Don’t Issue Orders, Make Solid Suggestions
If you order your mom or dad to do something, it may not go well. Think back to your teen years. How well did you respond to their firm demands that you clean your room or do your homework? Instead of using orders, make suggestions and back them up with reasons why it needs to be done.
For example, instead of saying, “You must take your medicine.” Explain why the medications are important and suggest that once your mom or dad has taken them, you could start working on a puzzle, playing a game, or doing something else your parent enjoys.
-Be Prepared to Say No and Stick to It
There will be times when your aging parent insists on doing things that just are not safe. If your dad has been told that he cannot drive because he’s legally blind, you’re going to have to take his keys away. He will fuss, but it’s important to his safety and the safety of others on the road.
-Try Not to React
When a parent feels backed into a corner, you may be on the receiving end of hurtful comments and actions. Don’t react to them unless it’s a safety issue. It’s better to walk away and ignore what was said. In the case of dementia, your mom or dad won’t even remember what was said.
-Look at Home Care Services Sooner Rather Than Later
You’ll need to take breaks for your own physical and emotional health. Home care services provide you with the chance to have a day off. Your mom or dad is under the care of a trained professional while you head to the spa, relax at home, or attend appointments. Call a home care agency to learn about the services offered by caregivers.
