The 2017 short documentary from director Laura Checkoway and Cher focuses on family disputes when it comes to elder care. As June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, it’s a good film to watch.

Who Were Edith and Eddie?
Edith Hill and Eddie Harrison were in their 80s when they met. Harrison eventually moved in with Hill and her daughter and granddaughter. After 10 years of being friends and companions, the couple married in 2014. By that point, Hill started showing signs of dementia.
Hill had three daughters. One was her court-appointed guardian, who gave up the role in 2014 saying it was too much. The other two sisters became co-guardians and didn’t agree on anything. As a result, the court appointed a guardian ad litem to make decisions regarding her care.
One sister wanted her mother sent down to Florida. The other sister wanted Hill to move into the family home under her care. A judge ruled the house needed renovations before it would be considered safe for the elderly couple.
Singer and actress Cher learned of the couple’s situation and told the court she would pay for necessary upgrades to make the home safe for the seniors. She also said she would pay for the home care services.
A judge agreed to that and ordered that Hill be moved to Florida until the home repairs were completed. From there, things went downhill and disagreements ensued. Eventually, a court-appointed guardian ordered Hill be sent back to Florida. Harrison had never flown before and didn’t want to travel on a plane at that point in his life. He and his wife were separated. He died a few weeks later.
Make Sure the Focus is Always on Your Parents
To this day, there are still arguments over how much of the documentary is true and how much paints an untrue story. What is true is that had the family had a solid care plan in place and stuck to the agreement, this could have been avoided.
Don’t put your squabbles first. If your mom or dad need home care, arrange it as soon as possible. Let the experienced caregivers make sure your parents are getting the right care. Learn more about the different ways caregivers help the elderly age at home.
If you haven’t seen Edith & Eddie, you should. It’s not an easy watch, but it definitely brings up a side of elder care planning that families don’t often think about.
